1861   Confederate States of America military forces fire the first shot in the American Civil War, attacking Union (American Civil War) Fort Sumter in South Carolina

1865   Confederate States of America general Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union (American Civil War) general Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in the state of Virginia, ending the American Civil War

1998   Convicted murderer Karla Faye Tucker is executed in Huntsville, Texas. She becomes the first woman executed in the United States since 1984 and the first to be executed in the state of Texas since the American Civil War.
