1993   Catherine Callbeck becomes Premier of Prince Edward Island. She becomes the first elected female premier in Canada.

1993   Kim Campbell is elected Prime Minister of Canada, becoming the first female Prime Minister in the country's history.

1993   The Liberal Party defeats the governing Progressive Conservative Party in a federal election in Canada.

1993   Jean Chrétien is appointed Prime Minister of Canada.

1994   Hockey becomes Canada's official winter sport.

1995   Steve Fossett completes his highly publicized balloon flight across the Pacific Ocean, landing in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is the first such solo balloon.

1995   In the case of Egan v. Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada rules that that sexual orientation constitutes a prohibited basis of discrimination under Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

1996   Severe floods of the Saguenay River in Quebec, Canada kill 10 people and cause $1 billion in damages. It is the first billion dollar natural disaster in Canada's history.

1998   The Supreme Court of Canada rules that Quebec can not legally secede from Canada without the approval of the federal government.

1999   Nunavut, Canada's third territory, is created from the eastern portion of Northwest Territories.

2000   Jean Chrétien re-elected as Prime Minister or Canada and the Liberal Party increases its majority in House of Commons.

2003   Paul Martin is sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada.

2004   The Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Paul Martin loses its majority in the 38th general election in Canada

2005   Canada's passes the Civil Marriage Act, which legalizes same-sex marriage in the country.
