1991   Croatia and Slovenia attain independence and become separate countries. They were a part of Yugoslavia.

1991   Slovenia, Croatia, and Yugoslavia sign the Brioni Agreement in the island of Brioni, near Pula, Croatia, ending the ten day war in Slovenia.

1991   The Croatian Parliament severs all ties with Yugoslavia and becomes completely independent.

1996   Ron Brown is killed in a plane crash in near Dubrovnik, Croatia.

2000   Stipe Mesic is elected president of Croatia.
