1994   Finland votes to join the European Union.

1995   Austria, Finland and Sweden join the European Union.

1998   Nineteen European nations sign an agreement to prohibit human cloning including: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

2000   Tarja Halonen is elected president of Finland. She is the first female Finnish president
