1993   A car bomb at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy kills 5.

1996   A fire in Venice, Italy destroys La Fenice

1997   A fire damages the renowned Turin Cathedral in Turin, Italy. The Shroud of Turin is removed by firefighters before it can be damaged.

1998   Nineteen European nations sign an agreement to prohibit human cloning including: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

1998   A United States warplane flying over a resort near Trento, Italy severs a wire supporting cable cars, causing one car to fall to the mountain below. Nineteen skiers and a cable car operator are killed.

1999   Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is elected President of Italy.

2004   In Rome, Italy, a treaty establishing the first Constitution for Europe was officially signed by the representatives of the then twenty-five Member States of the European Union.

2005   Silvio Berlusconi tenders the resignation of his government following losses in regional elections in Italy

2005   An ATR-72 airliner heading from Bari, Italy to Djerba, Tunisia crashes into the Mediterranean Sea. Sixteen of the thirty-two people on board died.
