Portugal Timeline

1996   Jorge Sampaio is elected president of Portugal.

1998   Nineteen European nations sign an agreement to prohibit human cloning including: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

2001   The Hintze Ribeiro Bridge in northern Portugal collapses, killing up to 70 people.

2003   The Letter of the Eight is signed by leaders of eight countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, demonstrating support for the United States' plans to invade Iraq.

2005   Socialist Party candidate José Sócrates wins a landslide victory in his bid for Prime Minister of Portugal.
