1996   Thomas Hamilton enters a Primary School in Scotland and opens fire, killing 17 and wounding 13 before fatally shooting himself.

1996   Dolly the sheep, is born at the Roslin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland.

1997   Scientists in Roslin, Scotland announce that they have successfully cloned an adult sheep. The cloned animal (Dolly) is the first mammal cloned from an adult cell.

1997   Scotland votes in a referendum to create its own Parliament after being united with 290 years of union with England.

1999   The first elections are held in Wales and Scotland for the newly formed Scottish Parliament and National Assembly for Wales.
