1996   Heavy rains kill more than 80 people near Huesca, Spain.

1998   Nineteen European nations sign an agreement to prohibit human cloning including: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

2002   The euro replaces the Peseta as the official currency of Spain

2002   The oil tanker "Prestige" sinks off the coast of Spain, causing an oil spill which contaminates thousands of kilometers of coastline.

2003   The Letter of the Eight is signed by leaders of eight countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, demonstrating support for the United States' plans to invade Iraq.

2003   Spanish authorities stop a plot by the ETA to bomb Chamartín Station in Madrid, Spain

2004   Millions of Spanish citizens take to the streets in Spain to protest the March 11 terrorist attacks in Madrid.

2004   Socialist candidate José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero defeats incumbent conservative government led by José María Aznar in parliamentary elections in Spain. Many blame the upset on the Madrid train bombings on March 11.

2004   Newly elected Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero announces that Spain will withdraw all of its 1,300 troops from Iraq.

2005   Fire destroys the Windsor Tower in Madrid, Spain. The building is later demolished after a partial collapse caused by fire damage.

2005   Spain votes to ratify the constitution of the European Union by a 4-1 margin. Spain was the first of the EU countries to vote in a referendum on the EU constitution.

2005   Spain legalizes same-sex marriage.
