1994   Voters in Sweden decide to join the European Union.

1994   Civil unions of homosexual couples are legalized in Sweden.

1995   Austria, Finland and Sweden join the European Union.

1998   Nineteen European nations sign an agreement to prohibit human cloning including: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.

1998   Two arsonists in Gothenburg, Sweden, set fire to a disco, killing 63, and injuring over 200.

2003   Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh is stabbed in a department store in Stockholm, Sweden and dies on the following day.

2003   Voters in Sweden reject a proposal to use the Euro as their currency.
