1865   Confederate States of America general Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union (American Civil War) general Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in the state of Virginia, ending the American Civil War

1993   Clinton administration deputy counsel Vincent W. Foster Jr. commits suicide in a Virginia park.

1994   A Virginia jury finds Lorena Bobbitt not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of dismembering her husband's penis.

1997   A Fairfax, Virginia jury in finds Mir Aimal Kansi guilty of the murder of two CIA employees.

2001   Nearly 3,000 people are killed in a series of coordinated terrorist attacks perpetrated by al-Qaeda against the United States. The attacks take place in New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

2002   Three people are killed and three others are wounded at the Appalachian School of Law, in Grundy, Virginia when a disgruntled former student opens fire.
